We are safely in Guangzhou now and back online! We left the Chongqing airport last night at 6:45 and got into The Holiday Inn in Guangzhou about 10 pm. Jiji did amazingly well on the airplane. We gave her a bottle for take off and for landing and she did just fine. We were very surprised at how easily she traveled and really were counting our blessings. We checking into our room and she and Connor were very excited to have a little bit more space. The kids (still love saying that) were both pretty wound up. Unfortunately for us, Jiji really didn't want to sleep at all and spent most of the night crying. It was the first night that was really trying for both of us and we tried everything to get her to relax and sleep. Finally after bouts off and on she fell asleep and slept from 5:30 am to 9 am. Needless to say, the entire 9th floor of the Holiday Inn knows the Heids are here!
This morning we took Jiji over to have her medical exams done. There were lots of parents with adopted little ones all doing the same thing. Depending on the age of the child and the type of orphan petition you have filed, the kids need to get immunizations, etc. Luckily for us, we are an I-600 family so Jiji didn't' have to get the shots done today. Some parents, like us, who are just trying to get attached to their kids had to put them through the series of shots today. Not cool.
Jiji must have had a very nice doctor at the orphanage because she had no fear of the white coats at all. In fact, she was all smiles and giggles as the nurses and doctors while they were checking on her. I think she thought the doctor was actually trying to tickle her. I know Andrea is constantly looking for some sort of sign that she is attaching to us, but the truth is she goes pretty easily to anybody. I am not too worried about it and maybe I should be, but we have only had her for 5 days and her little personality seems to be one of extreme curiosity and friendliness. She does seem to smile much more readily to anybody who is Chinese. I think that is wonderful and shows that she was treated very well in the orphanage and has no remorse.
We are also beginning to see a very independent little person emerge. When she doesn't want something (like her bottle) she has no problem shoving it away. That is also true if she doesn't want to see your face at the moment; she will shove that away too!
Our hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the island where we meet up with our guide and the rest of the group for the daily appointments, etc. Our hotel is in kind of a fun place. It is very close to all kinds of spice shops , traders, etc. It is truly hustle and bustle right below our hotel and we step right into it on our way out.
Well, Connor is clamoring for some pool time and he finished his obligatory readings for today.
